Student Activities

Fencing is a sporting activity that our students have participated in since 1999 through the Central Pennsylvania Fencing Association. Students in grades 2 through 8 learn the basics of skills of fencing through this fun after-school activity. At the culminating tournament for the 2015-16 school year, our NCS Fencing Team placed third overall and the boys division placed second. Way to go!

Tennis lessons were a new addition to sports activity offerings for the 2015-16 school year through the Centre Region Community Tennis Association. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth learn the basic skills of tennis through this fun after-school activity. Students receive instruction through this 5-week course.

Skiing / Snowboarding lessons were a new addition to sports activity offerings for the 2015-16 school year through the Tussey Mountain Intramural Ski program. Students in grades third through eighth learned the basic skills of skiing or snowboarding in a fun and friendly environment through this after-school activity at Tussey Mountain. Two parents provided supervision for our students through this 4-week program.

The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is the only competition program of its kind. This competition offers live, in-person events in all 50 states, as well as U.S. territories and schools worldwide through the U.S. Department of Defense and State Department.

NCS-math_counts_1The Competition Series is ideal for students who have a talent and passion for math and who need to be challenged. Students will engage in exciting, “bee-style” contests in which they will compete against and alongside other bright, motivated students. At the local, state and national level, students win hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes every year.

NCS is excited to be a part of the competition! Each MATHCOUNT team consists of up to 10 members in grades 6-8 and is led by Mrs. Stevens. Competition takes place in late January and is located at Penn State Altoona.

The team works together during lunch as well as during focus periods. This year we hope to join with Park Forest Middle School and Mount Nittany Middle School as part of our preparation process. This is something you totally want to be a part of!

Soccer Shots

Soccer Shots has been a part of the NCS sports offerings since 2011. With fall and spring seasons, students in kindergarten through second grade are able to learn the basic skills of soccer in this fun after-school activity. Students receive instruction through the courses which last 6 weeks each.

Science Olympiad

Nittany Christian School is proud to participate in the national Science Olympiad competition. Our team each year is comprised of fifteen of the top students from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science classes and is lead by Mr. Shreckengast and Mrs. Stevens.

The team works during lunches and after school studying for exams and designing devices for the competition. The culmination of this preparation is traveling to compete in events and tests such as: forensics, bridge building, meteorology, anatomy & physiology, cartography, and even designing a Rube Goldberg-style machine. This activity is both challenging and a lot of fun!

Haven of Hope

Haven of Hope was started by State College Christian Church to minister to the orphaned children in Zambia by providing a school and a safe haven for these children. There are currently two schools operating that provide quality education, a school uniform, medical care and two meals per day for over 100 students.

Nittany Christian School is proud to partner with Haven of Hope by sponsoring a student, as well as helping in other ways throughout the year (ie: gift bags, school wide Christmas celebration party, etc.).

Haven of Hope is currently in the middle of a building project in Zambia, and is also in the process of expanding into Uganda! Check out this summer 2016 update excerpt from Pastor Vince Smith:

“You may have heard the news: Haven of Hope is expanding into the country of Uganda! A new school for orphaned and vulnerable children will open in Bugoi, a village in northern Uganda, in January 2017. Our goal is to begin serving 40 grade 1 students and 20 preschoolers on opening day. We are thrilled that 6 of these children have already been sponsored! We are believing that God will provide additional sponsors, as well as the $24,000 needed to construct a permanent three-room school building in Bugoi. Construction has already begun and will continue as resources become available.

After much anticipation, the students in Ndola, Zambia, moved into their new building in May. (Be sure to read John Banda’s article!) While that project is very close to completion, there is still a need for $19,018 to wrap it up. If you would like to invest in either of these building projects, it would be greatly appreciated by the hundreds of children who will be served in these schools!”
